The John O’Groats Mill is a B listed former industrial building set
on the north coast of Scotland over looking the Pentland Firth.

Despite not functioning as a mill for over 20 years, it has been well maintained and all its original internal machinery survives intact. Surrounding the mill are two holiday cottages housed in former
milling buildings, the mill pond and associated water courses,
the Burn of Duncansby and an agricultural landscape.

Milling has taken place on this site for c.1,000 years developing alongside changes in milling practices from Norse horizontal click
mills to the current mill built in 1901. This provides a context for visitors to understand the mill’s operation and wider role in society and its place in the landscape and contribution to the local environment.

The current mill was built in 1901 on the site of previous mills going back centuries. The Houston family milled in this location from 1750 until 2001 and the mill was one of the last water powered mills to be built in Scotland.
